Filter Element Failure Modes: Collapse, Fatigue, Hydrolysis, and Corrosion

Common failure modes for hydraulic filter elements include four types. Collapse failure: differential pressure exceeds the strength of the frame or media, causing deformation or rupture, often seen with bypass valve failure or cold starts. Fatigue failure: long-term exposure to cyclic differential pressure causes micro-cracks in the media, reducing β ratio. Fatigue resistance can be verified by ISO 3724 flow fatigue test. Hydrolysis failure: water ingress into the oil decomposes the glass fiber binder, softening the media, common in water-contaminated hydraulic systems. Corrosion failure: acidic oil or chlorinated solvents attack the metal frame and end caps. These can be prevented by using hydrolysis-resistant media, stainless steel frames, and proper maintenance.
