The hydraulic oil filter element is a key protective component of the hydraulic system. Its core function is to filter contaminants in the oil to protect hydraulic components and extend the service life of the oil and equipment. Depending on their installation positions in the system, their characteristics and uses are clearly distinguished.

The following table summarizes the core differences among the three main filter elements of the suction oil circuit, pressure oil circuit and return oil circuit, which can help you quickly understand.

Filter Element Type

Installation Location

Main Features

Core Purpose

Suction Line Filter Element

Suction port of hydraulic pump

Generally for coarse filtration, high flow capacity, low pressure drop, to prevent pump cavitation. Mostly mesh or slit structure.

Protect the hydraulic pump and prevent large particle contaminants from entering the system.

Pressure Line Filter Element

After pump outlet, before precision components

Withstands system high pressure, high filtration accuracy, strong structural strength. Usually integrated with bypass valve and blockage alarm.

Protect valves, cylinders, motors and other key precision components, and is the core filtration link of the system.

Return Line Filter Element

Before oil returns from actuator to tank

Lower system pressure, medium filtration accuracy, effectively controls the cleanliness of oil returning to the tank.

Purify the oil returning to the tank and control the contamination level of the entire system.

In addition to the positional differences mentioned in the above table, hydraulic oil filter elements also have the following common characteristics:

Diverse materials and structures: Filter elements can be made of various materials such as stainless steel woven mesh, sintered mesh, metal wire, and glass fiber filter paper, and adopt single or multi-layer structures to meet different filtration requirements.

Equipped with safety protection design: Many filter elements (especially pressure pipeline filter elements) are integrated with bypass valves. When the filter element is clogged and the pressure difference is too large, the bypass valve will automatically open to ensure that the oil can bypass the filter element and continue to circulate, avoiding system flow interruption. Some are also equipped with clogging transmitters that can issue replacement alerts.

Main uses and importance

The main function of the hydraulic oil filter element is to control the contamination level of the hydraulic oil. According to statistics, over 70% of faults in hydraulic systems are caused by oil contamination. The filter element can effectively prevent component wear, scratches, jamming and small hole blockage by intercepting particulate matter, thus ensuring the stable and reliable operation of the system.
